Thriller Genre and typical codes of conventions

For week 3, Siobhan and I planned more about what is going to happen in our short film and looking more into the codes and conventions in that particular genre.

The typical codes and conventions of the Thriller genre include:
  • low key lighting
  • quick cuts
  • shadows
  • tense music
  • changes in angle shots
  • diegetic sound of breathing
  • black and white shots
  • montage of shots
Themes of a thriller

Narrative will have been designed so the audience will think that it can happen to them, which will make them feel scared.

Sound in a thriller

Music is essential in any film to understand the mood of the characters and hint at a significant part in the film. In a thriller it adds tension and suspense. It will often start slow and gradually build up for the audience.

Types of Genre to look at

This week, we had to decide which pair or group we would like to be in, I have decided to be in a pair with Siobhan and then start thinking about what our narrative for our production would be about.

We haven't decided whether or not we wanted to create a linear or non-linear structure, however we have decided which genre to use; something along the lines of a thriller.

We will have to look into the codes and conventions of that particular genre in order to interact with the audience and not to confuse them.

What is Digital Media? Link to Oxford Dictionary meaning: http://public.oed.com/aspects-of-english/word-stories/digital/

Marshall Mcluhan's 'Ages of Man'

According to Mcluhan, media are 'extensions of man'
... the particular age we're in, affects the way we think and the way we do things..'

Problem is...
...we tend to think we are still living in the age that precedes our current age
... are our rules/culture/norms etc still those that are pertinent to the 'electronic age'?
